Giving Little Things to a Big God
The Bible is littered with examples of people who gave little things to a big God and in doing so contributed to the purposes and mission of God in their day and generation. Rahab’s rope, Paul’s bucket, David’s sling and Sampson’s jawbone, the anonymous disciple in the boat who made a bed so Jesus could rest are all examples where we see risktakers, conquerors and caregivers.
I recently came across another example of a lady not mentioned in scripture only because she was born two millenniums too late! She lived in Hawaii and worked as a maid in one of the hotels that line the beach. She was a lady of modest means with very little. In a back room of her modest house she creatively carved pieces of wood to look like open wooden books. She explained that she couldn’t read, so it would be difficult for her to teach. She explained that she had little income, so it would be impossible to give money. But somewhere she had learned this craft and was now using it to introduce her faith to her friends. Her plan was simple. She took the wooden book and on one side of it pasted a Polaroid picture of her friend. On the other she put a Bible verse. Her rationale? People love to see a picture of themselves. Most of her friends were simple folks with few wall decorations. Here was a way to hang a Bible verse on their wall where they would see it every day. Would something come of it? You never know. But God does. God uses tiny seeds to reap great harvests.
Mother Teresa once said; “Prayer in action is love, and love in action is service. Try to give unconditionally whatever a person needs in the moment. The point is to do something, however small, and show you care through your actions by giving your time…. We are all God’s children, so it is important to share His gifts. Do not worry about why problems exist in the world – just respond to people’s needs … We feel what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean, but that ocean would be less without that drop.“
That is so true, let me encourage you to do just that to use the gifts God has given you to reach out to others because those tiny seeds you sow have the potential to reap a great harvest in the purposes of God.
